Turkey #2

After staying one night at the resort on the beach we headed to Assos.  Assos is a site that is believe to be where Paul taught the gospel to people living along the road from Troas to Assos.  Once again we have a lot of cool pillars and columns left over from the site.

The next stop we made after lunch was at Pergamon.  We had to take a tram to get to the top of the huge mountain this site was located on.  It had a breathtaking view of the city below it.  Here is where John addressed the people and criticized them.

The Theater

Temple of Athena

More columns!  People at the Center ask me what my favorite part of the trip was and it is hard to remember all the sites we went to because they all looked the same!

It was a long bus day so we only had two major sites to visit, then it was off to the hotel!  We stayed at this hotel that was in the shape of a cruise ship and it was right on the beach as well.  The buffet dinner there was probably the best dinner I have ever had at a hotel.  Their dessert bar was ridiculously good to.  The next day we headed to the Church of St. John.  It was supposed to be the hottest day of our Turkey trip but it ended up being really overcast and windy so it was really pleasant.  Here they have a grave where John was supposedly buried.  But we as Latter-Day Saints believe that he was translated.

The Tomb of St. John

The next stop was Ephesus.  This was probably my favorite site that we visited all week.  There were hundreds of people there because a few cruise ships had docked so there were many tours going on and it was really crowded.  We saw more columns but we also saw the famous Library and The Great Theater where Paul would have taught.  At a lot of sites we visit we say that the event would have taken place somewhere in the general area.  So it was really cool to be able to know for certain that Paul was in the Theater teaching the people of Ephesus.

People on people on people

Goddess Nike.  Where Nike got their logo idea.

The Library amazed me at how grand it was and how much was still intact.
